The Ministry of Planning and Development of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia officially launched the Ethiopian Universities Forum on Climate Action (EUFCA) on March 7, 2025, at Addis Ababa University. The establishment of the forum marks a significant national milestone in strengthening coordinated climate action through higher education institutions across Ethiopia. Recognizing the growing threats posed by climate change and environmental degradation, the Ministry took this initiative in line with its mandate to coordinate environmental protection and climate change affairs at the national level.
On this historic occasion, the Ministry of Planning and Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 40 Ethiopian universities aimed at enhancing collaboration, partnership, and institutional coordination in climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts. The agreement reflects the government’s strong commitment to mobilizing the academic sector as a strategic partner in addressing the country’s pressing environmental and climate-related challenges. The forum is expected to serve as a national platform that brings universities together to share knowledge, strengthen research collaboration, exchange best practices, and collectively contribute toward Ethiopia’s green development agenda.
The establishment of EUFCA is based on the recognition that Ethiopian universities have a critical responsibility and unique capacity in advancing environmental sustainability and climate resilience. As centers of excellence in teaching, research, and innovation, universities play a vital role in integrating environmental and climate science into academic curricula, thereby producing graduates who are knowledgeable and equipped to respond to climate challenges. In addition, universities are expected to undertake problem-solving research that addresses the country’s environmental and climate vulnerabilities, including issues related to deforestation, land degradation, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, renewable energy, and sustainable agriculture.
Furthermore, higher education institutions are increasingly becoming hubs for innovation and technological advancement. Through EUFCA, universities are encouraged to develop and promote innovative green technologies and practical solutions that support climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts. These innovations can contribute significantly to sustainable development by improving energy efficiency, promoting renewable energy use, supporting climate-smart agriculture, and enhancing natural resource management systems. The forum also creates opportunities for universities to engage communities, policymakers, development partners, and the private sector in collective climate action initiatives.
The Ministry of Planning and Development emphasized that addressing climate change requires coordinated and collective efforts among all stakeholders. In this regard, the Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with Ethiopian universities in a cooperative and organized manner to strengthen institutional capacity, promote environmental awareness, encourage scientific research, and support evidence-based policy development. Through this partnership, universities are expected to become active contributors to Ethiopia’s national climate goals and the implementation of the country’s green growth and environmental sustainability strategies.
The launch of the Ethiopian Universities Forum on Climate Action therefore represents not only a partnership between government and academia, but also a strategic national movement aimed at empowering higher education institutions to become leading actors in combating the impacts of climate change and building a resilient, sustainable, and environmentally conscious society for future generations.
